FEDARENE Info 50 — Focus on District Heating and Cooling

Heating and cooling drive half of the energy consumption in Europe. However, more than two-thirds of demand is met with fossil fuels. Changing the conventional fossil paradigm in heating and cooling is essential for reaching the EU decarbonisation goals.

District heating is one of the most promising options to decarbonise the heating sector and urban environments in general and is therefore crucial to reach European and global climate goals. Yet, several EU Countries are still facing challenges in implementing this technology: old and inefficient infrastructure, the unreliability of supply, loss of consumers…
