John Fogarty has been a driving force behind community-led energy in Ireland. He led the creation of Ireland’s first and only community-owned wind farm, a community energy supply company, and a national energy cooperative, ensuring financial benefits stay within local communities.

Through RESCoop, he has bridged local efforts with EU collaboration, hosted delegations, and influenced energy policy. A key advisor to the Minister for Energy, he has shaped strategies for community energy growth. His resilience and values-driven leadership have earned him widespread respect across the sector.

Creativity and Strategic Vision

John recognised early on that community energy could revitalise rural Ireland. Partnering with Tipperary Energy Agency in 1999, he launched feasibility studies in Templederry, identifying renewables as a tool for economic diversification and environmental sustainability. His leadership overcame 12 years of challenges to develop a €6 million community wind project, completed in 2012.To expand community energy, John secured grid connections for projects nationwide, proactively submitting applications to ensure communities had access. As a result, two 5MW community-owned solar farms are near completion, with more in development. His foresight and strategic vision have paved the way for widespread participation in the energy sector.

Impact

John’s work has enabled Templederry Energy Resource Ltd to operate as a cooperative, allowing local investment in renewable energy. His role in launching Community Power, Ireland’s first community-owned electricity supplier, has provided a direct market route for small-scale renewable producers.

Beyond local projects, John has advocated at policy level, representing community energy in government consultations and pushing for regulatory change. His leadership led to the creation of Nationwide Community Energy Ireland CLG, a national body supporting community-led renewables.
