FEDARENE was created on the 6th of June 1990 by 6 regional authorities: Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, Wallonie, País Vasco, Aquitaine, and Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Motivated by various European Commission programmes, local authorities sought to elevate the voices of regions in the discussion of energy and environmental policies at the European level.
Energy agencies and regions play an essential role as accelerators of the energy transition. Our members are regional and local energy agencies, regional authorities and departments who implement, coordinate and facilitate sustainable energy and environment policies.

From its inception with only 6 regions, FEDARENE has expanded to include over 80 members across 25 European countries, continuously growing and developing its areas of focus from its headquarters in Brussels.
FEDARENE aims to empower energy agencies and regions towards a united and climate-neutral Europe. It acts as a bridge between the regional and European level, facilitating interregional cooperation, and adapting to the local particularities to ensure a just transition.
Our collaborative approach, innovative initiatives, and commitment to working closely with the members, partners, and stakeholders make it a valuable asset in the energy transition movement. Through its member-focused approach, FEDARENE has demonstrated a strong commitment to driving positive change and promoting a more sustainable future for all.
Over the years FEDARENE has established partnerships with various organisations that share our values and objectives. Since 2008, FEDARENE is part of the Secretariat managing the European Covenant of Mayors For Climate and Energy together with other prominent European networks. The initiative is now the world’s largest movement for local climate and energy actions, uniting more than 10.000 municipalities as signatories.
We are also involved in the ManagEnergy initiative, established in 2002 to support the +350 local and regional energy agencies across Europe through capacity-building and networking.
We believe that people are the driving force behind the Energy Transition, whether they work for a local or regional energy agency, a public authority, a non-profit organisation, or a private company. To recognise and celebrate the achievements of those working on the ground to advance the Energy Transition at a European scale, FEDARENE established in 2014 the Roger Léron Award.
Together with our members, experts, partners, and friends we co-create a sustainable Europe and world.
