Climate change impacts are intensifying across Europe. From heatwaves and droughts to floods, wildfires, and biodiversity loss, communities are increasingly facing challenges that require resilient infrastructure, ecosystems, and local economies.
In response to these growing pressures, FEDARENE members and other local and regional energy and climate agencies are putting adaptation into practice. Their initiatives, ranging from ecosystem restoration to strengthening infrastructure and engaging communities, help territories face these challenges while generating benefits for people and nature.
Adaptation Stories are one of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change’s tools to showcase real-life examples of regional and local action. They highlight good practices in the planning, funding, implementation, and monitoring of adaptation solutions, to inspire others and accelerate Europe’s collective journey toward climate resilience.
In recent years, initiatives from FEDARENE members have been featured as Adaptation Stories on the Climate-ADAPT platform, illustrating their contribution to this shared goal. For 2025, three new examples have been published this month, each highlighting a FEDARENE member’s approach to adaptation:
Facing heatwaves, droughts, and coastal erosion, the Consejo Insular de la Energía – through the Cabildo of Gran Canaria (Spain) – is leading climate adaptation on the island through multi-stakeholder coordination, innovative nature-based solutions, and ecosystem restoration. Its approach strengthens resilience, protects communities and ecosystems, and provides a model for inclusive, proactive governance.
In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (France), a key hub for climate innovation, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Energy Agency (AURA-EE) supports local authorities, researchers, and civil society in developing strategies that respond to diverse climate hazards. Through evidence-based decision-making, integrated approaches, collaboration, and structured knowledge sharing, the agency strengthens resilience across sectors and fosters the broader adoption of effective climate solutions.
The Energy and Climate Agency of Podravje (ENERGAP), in partnership with the Municipality of Maribor (Slovenia), is supporting the renaturalisation of the Pekre Stream through a coordinated series of integrated projects. These initiatives combine flood protection, ecological restoration, landscape development, and community engagement, enhancing urban resilience and the quality of urban life.
These stories showcase the diversity of adaptation actions across different contexts, including islands, mountains, and urban areas, and demonstrate how energy and climate agencies are advancing climate adaptation through innovation, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement. Their inclusion as Adaptation Stories underscores the important role these actors play in building a more climate-resilient Europe.
