European Year of Rail Launch event

As proposed by the Commission last year, the European Parliament named last month 2021 as the European Year of Rail! On this occasion, the Portuguese Presidency of the Council is organising the launch event of the Year of Rail on 29 March 2021.

Trains are the most sustainable option when it comes to transport of people and goods, accounting for less than 0.5% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. However, it accounts for only 7% of passenger transport and 11% of goods transport. There is therefore considerable scope for developing this mode of mobility in order to achieve the ambitious objectives of the European Green Deal. This year, the Commission set the objective to develop the rail sector by a large promotion among users but also by an adapted legislative agenda. The Commissionalso  adopted its Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy in December 2020, paving the way for more sustainable, smart and resilient mobility through the doubling rail freight and tripling high speed rail activity by 2050.
