In a time of growing urgency around the energy transition, the ISLET project is showing how local communities on islands can take control of their energy future. By empowering citizens to produce, manage, and share renewable energy, ISLET turns remote territories into frontrunners of the just transition.
On June 19, ISLET took centre stage at the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), where it was presented as a key example of community-led innovation in the energy sector by Ivan Zoković Cola from the Island Movement during the virtual panel “Energy Communities: Local Approach to Innovative Solutions.” The event brought together experts, organisations, and citizen initiatives that are changing the game through local energy projects.
Zoković shared how, through ISLET, islanders are no longer just energy consumers—they have become energy producers, owners, and decision-makers. The panel, organised by BATEC and Azimut360, showcased how initiatives like ISLET make the energy transition fairer, more inclusive, and rooted in local realities. Missed it?
On June 18, the Croatian organisations OTRA and KLIK energy cooperative hosted a free webinar titled “Introduction to Energy Communities”, aimed at individuals and groups looking to start their own local energy initiatives. The event was held in Croatian and provided practical insights on legal frameworks, financing options, technologies, and community involvement—drawing directly from the experiences of the ISLET and DECA projects.
These two events highlight the growing role of island energy communities in Europe’s green transition. Whether through international panels or grassroots training, ISLET continues to inspire action by showing that energy democracy starts with local empowerment.
