ISLET: Pioneering Energy Transition on Islands

Established in 2021, the Apsyrtides Energy Cooperative unites local government bodies, businesses, and residents of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago to drive the transition to clean energy and support the sustainable development of the islands.

In 2022, the cooperative successfully raised funds from its members to purchase land for the development of a solar power plant. Building on this progress, a new round of fundraising is set to begin early next year. This effort will be critical for advancing key milestones, including completing the main project design, securing a building permit, and planning the access road.

At the assembly held on 11 December 2024 in Cres, around thirty cooperative members gathered to discuss the next steps for the Filozići solar power plant. During the meeting, a detailed work plan for the upcoming year was presented, outlining priority actions such as finalising the project design, completing the investment study, obtaining a building permit, and designing the access road.

A key highlight of the discussion was the cooperative’s unique approach: basing the entire project on joint investments by its members. This inclusive model not only empowers the local community but also sets an inspiring example of how island communities can lead the way in sustainable development through collaboration and shared vision.

The ISLET Project

During the assembly was also presented the ISLET project, focused on the development of energy communities and accelerating the energy transition on islands. The project, involving the City of Cres and the Island Movement, includes the islands of Cres and Korčula as Croatian pilot sites.

The ISLET project is designed to tackle the unique challenges faced by island communities, providing innovative and sustainable solutions for decarbonisation and energy self-sufficiency. Through this initiative and others, the Cres community is not only making strides in its own energy transformation but also laying the groundwork for replicating these successful models across other islands.

What makes ISLET truly remarkable is its collaborative approach—bringing together local government, public institutions, entrepreneurs, and citizens. This powerful synergy is a testament to how collective efforts can turn the vision of energy transition and sustainable development into a reality. The ISLET project is leading by example, showing how island communities can become champions of sustainability through cooperation and shared goals.
