REGILIENCE OTS9 & OS3 – Nature at work: Driving NbS for a cooler, water-smart and more resilient Europe

Watch the recording of the ninth Open Training Session (OTS) from REGILIENCE, jointly held with the third Citizen Seminar. The session was a part of a series of webinars on capacity-building for regional actors working on climate change, with this edition focusing on Nature-based Solutions, exploring how this tool can boost climate resilience while benefiting local biodiversity and communities.

REGILIENCE’s ninth Open Training Session (OTS) and third Citizen Seminar delved into the topic of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), exploring how these actions can be effective in addressing climate challenges such as urban heat, coastal erosion, and water management, while supporting ecosystems and local communities. The session was part of a series of capacity-building events for regional actors working on climate adaptation.

In contrast to traditional grey infrastructure, being man-made interventions with predicted capacities, NbS incorporates elements of nature, contributing to biodiversity, bolstering resilience, and offering more flexible capacity. In addition, NbS can be effective at water management and promoting long-term sustainability.

The session presented insights into planning NbS projects while reviewing case studies of real-life NbS implementation. Discussions between researchers, practitioners, and citizens were also encouraged during the session, with a panel discussion between presenters and participants taking place at the end of the webinar.

Wrap-up and closing

Takeaways

  • NbS are inspired by and supported by nature, benefitting biodiversity and offering ecosystem services while bolstering resilience. Examples of NbS include seagrass meadows, agroforestry, constructed wetlands, and rain gardens.
  • Implementing NbS requires an acceptance of ecosystems’ unpredictability and a willingness to work with such factors that come with the co-existence with living matter.
  • There is a vital link between NbS and water, with urban greening projects requiring water, which should be taken into consideration when planning and implementing NbS.
  • NbS can be effective in making an urban area more livable and welcoming to residents, encouraging them to spend time in public spaces and in nature. It can also promote the social cohesion of a community.
