Due to the growing biogas industry in Denmark, the prices of biomass other than manure and deep litter is increasing. This has forced some biogas plants to look into new ways of getting biomasses.

Due to the growing biogas industry in Denmark, the prices of biomass other than manure and deep litter is increasing. This has forced some biogas plants to look into new ways of getting biomasses. One way is to pre-treat dead animals and waste from slaughterhouses, that normally cannot be treated in a biogas plant. The idea is to build a pre-treat plant, where you are cutting the dead animals and waste into smaller parts and boiling them for an hour under pressure in order to achieve hygienisation. After the pretreatment, you can use the biomass in biogas production. This can also bring more competition into the market in relation to the treatment of dead animals.
Aims and objectives of this action
The goal is to:
- Make a feasibility study to show if it is possible.
- To make the first negotiations with slaughterhouses on delivering waste.
- To go into a dialogue with farmer associations regarding dead animals on farms.
How this Action can be replicated
The veterinarian rules are the same all over Europe, so it would be possible to replicate the idea, although substantial financing is necessary.
