Biogas Action – Penhesgyn Landfill Site Anglesey, North Wales
The aim of this case study was to provide recommendations for increasing gas availability to the LFG engine at Penhesgyn Waste Site – thus extending its life and giving a sustainable future for potential new enterprises that might take advantage of it.

This case study follows on from a report prepared by Severn Wye Energy Agency and the University of South Wales in March of 2016. That report indicated that there were a number of ways in which the output from the landfill gas engine at Penhesgyn could be increased with a particular opportunity being available via the anaerobic digestion of various locally available biodegradable materials.
Baileys and Partners (a research partner in this report) have informally contacted a number of dairy farmers on the island and the outcome of these discussions have been positive and have led the report authors to conclude that the recommended option for a first stage AD project is to proceed with a digester that is, at least initially, having a high proportion of cattle slurry as its feedstock. In order to give confidence to the farmers that the digestate being returned to them is uncontaminated, it is recommended that the feedstock be carefully selected.
Aims and Objectives of this Action
The aim of this case study was to provide recommendations for increasing gas availability to the LFG engine at Penhesgyn Waste Site – thus extending its life and giving a sustainable future for potential new enterprises that might take advantage of the freely available heat energy. The plan was that the proposals would be implemented by third parties in collaboration with the Council. Furthermore, it aimed to provide a report in respect of the realistically available feedstock for a “wet” digester including comments on cost and transportation.
How this Action could be Replicated
The main concept of this project could be replicated, where there was scope or capacity in an engine. The main factors for consideration would include the availability of feedstock, the model of finance, and cooperation and communication between all involved. Severn Wye has instigated a search of all landfill sites in Wales to examine similar opportunities.
