This holiday season, Kuressaare, a town on the island of Saaremaa in Estonia, brings an innovative twist to its festive celebrations. While the town square’s traditional Christmas tree shines brightly, two smaller trees stand out by being illuminated through a unique method: energy generated by power bikes. These special bicycles convert pedalling into electricity, offering a fun and interactive experience for the community.
This innovative project is a collaboration between TalTech Kuressaare College and the Estonian Islands Energy Agency, with support from Saaremaa Municipality, Kuressaare Culture Center, Saaremaa Entrepreneurs’ Union, Arens Ehitustööd, Kuressaare Lions Club, HOIA Homespa, and the European Union’s LIFE programme.
Ruttar Teär, an engineer at TalTech Kuressaare College, designed the power bikes. He explains: “The dynamo on the bike converts pedalling into electricity, which powers the Christmas tree lights directly. It’s 100% renewable energy – eco-friendly and clean!”
Saaremaa Mayor Mikk Tuisk shares his excitement: “We’re thrilled to provide the community with an opportunity to engage with such a simple yet innovative solution. This project can inspire more initiatives in the future.”
Sulev Alajõe, Director of the Saaremaa Energy Agency, emphasises the project’s impact: “The power bikes make energy production accessible and relatable. Generating electricity might seem complex, but this project shows it can be fun and straightforward. We’re also testing how user-driven energy production works in winter conditions.”
Beyond the Christmas festivities, similar technologies could be applied to treadmills, gym equipment, or playground swings, integrating energy generation into daily activities.
Olari Aavik, Chairman of the Saaremaa Entrepreneurs’ Union, adds: “It’s important for people to see how their movement can create a tangible, positive impact while supporting clean energy initiatives.”
Everyone is invited to try the power bikes and help light up the Christmas trees with their energy. The faster you pedal, the brighter the lights will glow. Two bikes will be available in Kuressaare’s town square: one for adults and one for children.
The bikes will operate from 1 December 2024 to 6 January 2025, giving ample time for visitors and residents to join in the fun.
Celebrate this holiday season with a pedal-powered Christmas that combines joy, innovation, and sustainability!
