Balearic Energy Institute

Public agency for the energy transition in the Balearic Islands

Balearic Energy Institute

Institut Balear de l’Energia (IBE) is the public energy agency of the Government of the Balearic Islands. Its mission is to drive the region’s energy transition by promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and citizen empowerment.

IBE acts as an instrumental body for the implementation of public energy policies and develops its own projects in the fields of renewable generation, shared self-consumption, electric mobility, and municipal energy services. It also provides technical assistance to citizens and municipalities through a network of Energy Transition Offices across the islands.

Key projects led by IBE include:

  • MELIB Network (Electric Mobility Network of the Balearic Islands): a public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, covering all islands.
  • Shared self-consumption systems: installation of solar PV systems on public rooftops to supply clean energy to nearby households, with a focus on vulnerable consumers. Promotion of local collective models of energy production and use.
  • Energy Transition Offices: Supporting awareness-raising among citizens, businesses, and public administrations regarding energy and electric mobility. Technical support to local authorities to reduce consumption and emissions in public buildings and infrastructure.
  • Energy Efficiency: Improving energy efficiency in the facilities of the Autonomous Community.
  • Self-consumption of the Autonomous Comunity: Promoting the self-sufficiency of the Autonomous Community through the development of the CAIB Self-Consumption Plan.

With a strong focus on public service and the democratization of energy, IBE actively collaborates in national and European energy transition initiatives and networks.
