South of the Oporto Metropolitan Area Energy Agency (Energaia) is the competence and knowledge centre for the energy transition and sustainable energy in the South of the Oporto Metropolitan Area. Energaia is focused on the interdisciplinary nature of the energy transition, realising that effective policies must integrate areas of the environment, urban development, energy, and information and communication technologies.
Established in 2000, the agency provides services to associated municipalities, such as consulting and advisory services, the development of projects and studies, the promotion of training, and the dissemenation of best practices. Energaia is also responsible for the conception, implementation, and monitoring of Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPS) in the region.
Initially a municipal energy agency for the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, since 2011, Energaia has been a regional energy agency representing 6 cities in the South of Porto region and represents over half a million inhabitants. Energaia is one of the oldest energy agencies in Europe and holds unique achievements like submitting one of the first successful ELENA applications in Europe and producing the first EU monitoring report in the context of the Covenant of Mayors. Energaia is accomplished in the area of data monitoring, with the agency being one of the first to establish a system to track energy consumption data for multiple municipalities.
