New Open Letter: A 2040 EU energy efficiency target: The European Union’s first line of defence

FEDARENE is proud to join more than 90 companies, industry associations and civil society organisations in a joint letter to European Commission President von der Leyen, calling for a stable and predictable post-2030 energy efficiency framework, starting with a binding EU energy efficiency target for 2040.

The letter comes at a time when supply shocks, soaring energy prices and unprecedented summer heatwaves have made clear that energy efficiency is not optional, it is Europe’s first line of defence.

This matters because the current energy efficiency framework is already delivering real strategic benefits for the EU by:

• Supporting a European industry that employs more than 1.2 million people across over 650 production sites in Europe
• Strengthening the EU energy security – without energy savings achieved since 2000, EU’s energy consumption today would be around 29% higher
• Reducing energy bills and making the clean energy transition more feasible for citizens, businesses, and local authorities

The signatories call on the European Commission to build a post-2030 energy efficiency framework that provides the regulatory stability needed to sustain investment and continue delivering these benefits, starting with a binding 2040 energy efficiency target.
