The Plovdiv Energy Agency‘s pioneering project, “Energy for Plovdiv – Renovation Twin of Plovdiv,” won an award in the prestigious “City Lovers 2025” competition, organised by the Capital Cities Magazine. This award spotlights a groundbreaking digital tool set to transform how citizens and authorities approach the energy renovation of buildings.

What is the Renovation Twin?

The Renovation Twin of Plovdiv City is a novel, 3D platform based on a Geographic Information System (GIS) that brings the city’s energy future to life. This digital tool displays the energy performance of all residential buildings in the city and, most importantly, empowers citizens to simulate renovations in their own homes and visualise the potential outcomes.

The Renovation Twin opens with a dynamic virtual map that turns inspiration into action. Homeowners can explore real-world success stories by viewing already renovated buildings and their results, making it easy to find similar projects and estimate potential savings.

At the heart of the experience is the Renovation Motivator. This interactive feature lets homeowners input their building’s details and instantly test various energy upgrades. By providing a clear, visual comparison of their home’s current state versus its potential after renovation, the tool demystifies the process and builds the confidence needed to take the next step.

Advancing Energy Efficient Renovations for Residents and Authorities

The Renovation Twin is a first step towards building a large-scale tool to support decision-making and encourage citizens and local authorities to actively engage in the Renovation Wave. It does so by providing every citizen of Plovdiv with complete, accurate, and accessible information about their building’s energy performance and renovation potential. In addition, homeowners can explore their home’s energy status, simulate various energy measures, and make informed decisions about renovation.

Beyond empowering individual choices, the Renovation Twin gives local authorities a powerful, data-driven overview to strategically plan urban regeneration and prioritise renovation efforts across the city, turning the energy transition into a collaborative, community-wide endeavour.

The Renovation Twin is a core component of the “MultiHome” Integrated Home Renovation Service, implemented by the Plovdiv Energy Agency and the Municipality of Plovdiv. It is part of the MultiHome Service Hub and Platform, which facilitates the entire renovation journey for homeowners, supporting and accelerating the Renovation Wave across the Plovdiv Region.
