Electric vehicles in Natural Areas of Castilla y León Region

The Spanish region of Castilla y León is committed to sustainable tourism thanks to the initiative of introducing electric vehicles in the regional Natural Parks, in the frame of the project MOVELETUR, SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND ELECTRIC MOBILITY IN NATURAL AREAS.

The project objective is to create a network of tourist itineraries using electric vehicles in trans boundary natural areas of Castilla y León region and their neighbours of Portugal, financed by the cooperation program INTERREG V-A España – Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020.

The actions of the project will focus on:

• Promote a model of sustainable and clean tourism for visitors to the natural border (Spain- Portugal) areas.
• Create a network of “green tourist itineraries” connecting natural and cultural value points in natural border areas with electric vehicles.
• Training entrepreneurs of the tourism sector and in general from the natural areas in order to offer electro-mobility as a tourism option.
• Boosting a cross-border cooperation and joining work to achieve the real connection with electro-mobility of the population areas of the project. Also to achieve an integrated and attractive promotion of the local natural and cultural values, as well as to establish recharging points for electric vehicles at strategic locations.

Among the partners, besides the Regional Energy Agency of Castilla y León, EREN, Ente Regional de la Energía de Castilla y León, there is also the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y León and the Province of Avila with its Energy Agency, APEA, from the Spanish side. On the other hand, the Associação para o Desenvolvimento Integrado da Região do Barroso, ADIRBA, the Câmara Municipal of Bragança, the Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco and the regional energy agency called Agência Regional de Energia e Ambiente do Oeste – Oestesustentável, make up the Portuguese part of the project.

The achievements of the project will give results such as a decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases in natural areas with great natural and cultural value thanks to the electro-mobility, creation of Green Employment and fixation of population through training actions, improvement of knowledge in the natural and cultural values that have the transboundary natural spaces for using and enjoyment of the visitors, improvement of the quality and sustainability tourist offer for lodging and restoration.

One of the initial project activities is compiled experiences around the world of introducing electric vehicles in natural areas in order to learn from those already set best practices.
