Biogas Action – Guideline to managing biomethane production for bioCNG utilities in a local area

In 2017, AURA-EE published the first French guideline on biomethane and guaranty of origin for CNG facilities. The 60 pages guideline details regulation and gives awareness on the guaranty of origin mechanism and possibilities to use the biomethane as a local fuel. Concerning the framework, biomethane is the property of the gas supplier who will buy the gas. This mechanism doesn’t ensure local valorization and the local authority has to negotiate. We conducted a workshop and we worked with 3 local authorities to find solutions and define opportunities to use biomethane in direct link with the policy of the community. 3 possibilities: biomethane for buses, biomethane for local companies (trucks), biomethane for the existing refuelling station.

We worked with a lawyer and find solutions. The guideline will be published in September 2018.

Aims and objectives of this Action

Local authorities want to re-use their biomethane produced by the water treatment plant in the territory in a circular economic way.

How this Action could be replicated?

Writing a guideline on such an innovative subject and thus being the first publication in our country is a way to identify barriers and opportunities, and describe the state of the art and gives the first key points to negotiate within this new market.
