Estonian Islands launch new energy agency

In June 2024, the Estonian Islands Energy Agency (EISEA) officially became a member of the FEDARENE Network, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to promote sustainable energy practices. We are showcasing EISEA’s initiatives and dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions throughout the Estonian islands.

Estonian Islands launch new energy agency

The Estonian Islands Energy Agency (EISEA) is a non-governmental organisation established at the end of 2023 as the second regional energy agency in Estonia, following the Tartu Regional Energy Agency (TREA). While both agencies share similar operational principles, EISEA specifically addresses the unique energy challenges faced by the islands, including low-density settlements and less reliable electricity supply compared to the mainland.

EISEA was formed through collaboration among the municipalities of Saaerema, Hiiumaa, Muhu, Vormsi, and Kihnu, along with the entrepreneurs’ associations of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, the Saare Development Centre, and Tallinn University of Technology.

Objectives and goals of EISEA

The agency’s primary goal is to collaborate closely with local authorities, communities, and businesses to implement projects that improve energy sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.

EISEA director Sulev Alajõe states, “The problems and limitations related to energy issues on the islands are relatively similar, but the potential and opportunities are different. EISEA assists businesses, municipalities, communities, and cooperatives in overcoming limitations, finding necessary technical solutions, and raising capital for projects by providing advisory services. Anyone is welcome to contact EISEA’s specialists for help and advice.”

Tailored support for local entities

EISEA provides tailored support services for municipalities, businesses, and communities.

Municipalities can access assistance for various projects, including:

  • Renovating public buildings
  • Upgrading district heating systems
  • Transitioning to fossil-free transport
  • Implementing renewable energy projects
  • Attracting investment
  • Organising information events and training

EISEA provides advice to businesses regarding:

  • Planning for resource efficiency
  • Reducing emissions from their fleet
  • Implementing initiatives for renewable energy

Communities can benefit from support in forming energy cooperatives and receive advice on renovating apartment buildings. EISEA is also developing a training program specifically aimed at school leavers to prepare them for careers in the energy sector.

Commitment to Education and Research

EISEA prioritises collaboration with educational and research institutions to stay up-to-date with modern energy developments. The agency is actively participating in Europe’s Baltic Sea Energy Islands renewable energy program and is working alongside FEDARENE to further strengthen its sustainable energy initiatives.
