RePowerEU: the role of cities and regions in accelerating the energy transition to deliver on COP27 and the Paris Agreement goals

Join FEDARENE’s President Julije Domac, Head of Unit of DG ENER Adela Tesarova, Gunārs Ansiņš, Member of the Liepāja city council, and Virginia Marco Carcel, Director General of European Affairs of the Castilla – La Mancha region, in the Covenant of Mayors Europe & Comittee of Regions high – level workshop on October 12, 2022.

The 12 October 2022 from 09:30 to 11:00 Brussels time

The European Commission proposed on 18 May 2022 a plan to make Europe independent from Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible and to respond to rising energy prices and replenish gas stocks for next winter through energy savings measures, diversification of energy supplies, and accelerated roll-out of renewables.

Achieving the objectives of the RePowerEU while meeting the EU’s 2030 Climate and Energy targets will require an unprecedented mobilization across levels of governance and sectors. Europe’s 2020 energy targets were achieved due to the exceptional measures taken to address the COVID pandemic. Furthermore, the sum of the efforts planned in EU national energy and climate plans (NECPs) are not enough to reach the Fit for 55 targets. Extra efforts are therefore needed by all actors and by all sectors of our society.

The high – level networking session for Covenant Ambassadors, Coordinators and Supporters will be the occasion to discuss and debate on what regional and sub-regional authorities and other actors are doing and can do to support the EU in reaching its climate targets and energy dependency. It will also be an opportunity to discuss how the REPowerEU Plan will support the EU efforts in delivering on the Paris Agreement in preparation for the UNFCCC COOP27, to be held in Sharm el-Sheik in November 2022.

High representatives of the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions, the Covenant of Mayors Europe and regional authorities will showcase how the acceleration of energy transition can be improved and how regions are supporting the implementation of the REPowerEU Plan and thus contributing to achieving the EU climate objectives.

Finally, the event will be the occasion to celebrate the winners of the Covenant City in the Spotlight Award 2022.
