Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency

Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) is a non-profit, public-equivalent body initially set up to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.
MIEMA is part of the European network of Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) Energy Agencies, having been established in 2007 through funding received from the IEE programme and various Maltese public institutions.
The agency’s technical team includes professionals with different areas of expertise, including engineers, architects and urban planners. The different key experts have a long experience in the management of EU projects, funded under different programmes including Interreg MED, Interreg Europe, Italia-Malta, ENI, Life, Erasmus+ and H2020. MIEMA has developed projects in the fields of green economy, ICT, sustainable practices, and awareness raising to promote a behavioural shift towards energy transition changes.
Activities
The agency’s services and activities include:
- Carrying out studies related to the use of different renewable and innovative energy sources and their application to the national context, including solar, offshore wind and wave energy, as well as the production of biofuel from micro-algae
- Preparing action plans related to renewable energy sources, energy efficiency in buildings, eco-industrial areas and e-mobility.
- Developing higher education courses on environmental management.
Projects
Since its establishment, MIEMA has implemented more than 25 European projects, all related to the environment and sustainable energy, under a range of different programmes. Some include:
- ENERCOM Facility – Strengthening Malta’s energy communities
- ISLET – Innovative supporting schemes for community-led Energy Transition
- Elih-Med – installing PV systems and energy efficiency measures in 35 low-income households
- Developing energy training courses (BUS-Malta, BUS-Trainers, SEOP, EHCmap, Eneplan, Eresplan),
- Empower – implementing a pilot smart energy grid.
