About the EU Covenant of Mayors
The EU Covenant of Mayors is the leading initiative on climate and energy involving +11.000 actors including cities, towns, regions, energy and climate agencies, etc.
It is a movement of mayors and local & regional leaders stepping up their climate ambitions and committing to delivering action at the pace that science sets, in a joint effort to keep global temperature rise below 1.5℃ – the highest ambition of the Paris Agreement.
The EU Covenant envisions that by 2050 all European citizens will be living in climate-neutral, decarbonized and resilient cities with access to affordable, secure and clean energy. It calls for a transition that is fair, inclusive and respectful of us citizens of the world, and of our planet’s resources.
To reach such an ambitious goal, the EU Covenant of Mayors invites all its signatories to step up their ambitions and to achieve climate neutrality at the latest by 2050, meaning that net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the city system are reduced as close to zero as possible, with any small residual emissions balanced by removals or equivalent measures, based on their local b
MyCovenant platform
MyCovenant is the private virtual space of the EU Covenant of Mayors Community.
Once signed in, cities and towns (Covenant signatories) are able to: update their contact information, link their profile to those of relevant regions, provinces and national ministries (Covenant coordinators) and energy and climate agencies (Covenant supporters), and access the “reporting corner”.
The reporting corner is the main tool for European Covenant signatories to report and monitor the data of their Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP). Reported data allows signatories to demonstrate the concrete impact of their actions and their climate ambitions. The EU Covenant framework allows signatories to collect and analyse data in a structured and systematic manner, and serves as a basis for good climate and energy management and for tracking progress in implementation.
For more information on how to use MyCovenant for reporting purposes, you can consult the dedicated Reporting page.
On the 29th of September, a new version of the platform will be released.
Main changes
- MyCovenant was made simpler and more user-friendly through guided paths, onsite video tutorials and guidance documents.
- Hierarchy of fields has been improved, by moving mandatory fields at the top of the pages and optional ones at the bottom.
- Simpler requirements for emission inventories, creating two alternatives reporting pathways. In particular, the platform now allows for a simplified option for the reporting of emission inventories, allowing signatories to report only the total final energy consumption and GHG emissions by sector, providing also additional flexibility to accommodate national specificities.
- An archive feature has been also created, allowing signatories (and associated coordinators and supporters) to download submitted action plans and monitoring reports.
- Signatories can also download certificates on their latest commitments, and submitted action plans and monitoring reports.
- Easy access to the EU Covenant communication toolkit to promote own actions on social media.
- New and more user-friendly dashboards for Covenant signatories, coordinators and supporters.
What’s in for energy and climate agencies
Energy and climate agencies can join the EU Covenant of Mayors as Covenant supporters.
Becoming a Covenant Supporter provides:
- Opportunities to connect with EU initiatives and events, gaining inspiration and strengthening cooperation with relevant actors across Europe.
- A recognised platform to engage local authorities, supported by a common methodology, language and resources for climate and energy planning.
- Greater visibility and recognition at European and international level, with opportunities to showcase expertise, activities and good practices.
- A European network for cooperation and knowledge-sharing, connecting with other organisations working to support local climate and energy transitions.
If signatories share their profile with a Covenant Supporter, the latter can:
- Keep its profile but also the signatories’ associated profiles always up-to-date.
- Keep track on signatories’ progress (e.g. action plan, monitoring).
- Request an 18-months extension of deadline for signatories’ action plans.
- Request an 18-month extension of the deadline for signatories to submit their monitoring reports.
