As the confirmation hearings of the European Commissioners-designate conclude, FEDARENE welcomes the strong commitments to the EU Green Deal and Europe’s climate and energy goals. Regions and energy agencies stand ready to support the EU in achieving these objectives.
Local and regional energy agencies, which are recognised as key facilitators of the energy transition under the revised Energy Efficiency Directive, play a crucial role in helping cities and regions meet their climate ambitions. By supporting long-term planning and empowering citizens toward clean energy actions—such as through renovation one-stop shops—these agencies act as indispensable partners in achieving Europe’s climate and energy targets.
FEDARENE’s President Julije Domac reacts to this significant political momentum, outlining the future of EU climate and energy policies that will shape the regions, cities, and agencies across Europe:
“The recent hearings underscore the critical role of climate resilience, renewable energy, and industrial decarbonisation in shaping the EU’s competitive future. As we navigate an evolving global landscape, prioritizing these pillars is essential—not only to meet our climate goals but to strengthen Europe’s industrial base, foster innovation, and enhance energy security. Therefore implementing the Green Deal is crucial, and regional and local energy agencies are key partners, acknowledged in the Fit for 55 package and RepowerEU action plan, to support the energy transition towards fully renewable energy solutions. We especially welcome the Clean Industrial Deal as an opportunity to boost the competitiveness of Clean businesses. Climate neutrality is a driver for industrial competitiveness. Therefore, our network stands ready to supporting the European Commission, to implement new energy legislation, and the upcoming Action Plan for Affordable Energy Prices, for Housing and for Electrification. This will be possible thanks to the appropriate support to local capacities through a smartly-designed Multiannual Financial Framework, and the relevant rollout of the Social Climate Fund and Just Transition Fund. Together, let’s work towards a fair, green and competitive future for all citizens across the EU!”
Julije Domac, President of FEDARENE
With over 300 Local and Regional Energy Agencies across Europe—employing 3,800 energy and climate experts—these agencies are trusted partners of cities, regions, and citizens, supporting them in achieving climate and energy goals. They accelerate and upscale investments, help the EU implement sustainability policies, provide technical assistance, and connect stakeholders across governance levels. Thanks to their deep understanding of local challenges, energy agencies are well-positioned to design integrated decarbonisation pathways that enhance business competitiveness and resilience.
As independent organisations, they also support SMEs by providing crucial data and energy management solutions. Energy agencies are ready to make climate resilience and renewable energy the driving force toward climate neutrality.
Since 1990, FEDARENE has united Europe’s regions in overcoming energy and climate challenges. Every step we take away from fossil fuels brings us closer to energy security and independence. The next five years are critical in turning these challenges into opportunities. We urge the new College of Commissioners to make this period a historic turning point—one where Europe leads in implementing the Green Deal and champions a fair, climate-neutral energy transition.
