When biofuel is piled up, the risk of spontaneous ignition, undesirable ignition of biofuel, increases. Self-ignition is a challenge for all operations dealing with solid biomass storage as there is always a risk of spontaneous ignition. These are estimated to be associated with costs totalling around SEK 300 million per year. The environmental aspect is also important to consider as large volumes are incinerated uncontrolled.
