Local solutions to the energy crisis: empowering citizens through renewable energy communities

The Covenant of Mayors – Europe is organising a hybrid policy session during the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) on 29 September at 11:30 – 13:00 on Local solutions to the energy crisis: empowering citizens through renewable energy communities.

The 29 September 2022 from 11:30 to 13:00 Brussels time

To accelerate the clean energy transition and increase Europe’s energy independence in the context of the REPowerEU plan, Renewable Energy Communities will become an indispensable tool to increase energy security, decentralise the governance of energy production, lower energy bills, boost local investments and promote active local participation of the civil society.

The session will highlight concrete ways in which Renewable Energy Communities are supporting municipalities and rural areas at the local level to deliver a fair and just transition. It will also provide a practical catalogue of approaches that local governments of all sizes are already implementing on the ground.

Moderated by DG ENER, this interactive session will feature the Energy Communities Repository, the Rural Energy Community Advisory Hub, and will bring best practices from two of the Covenant of Mayors – Europe signatories.

All stakeholders interested in accelerating the renewable energy transitions through the active involvement of citizens, including municipalities, energy agencies, energy communities, regions, provinces, and EU federations of the private sector active in the field of renewable energy, and citizens, are invited to join us on 29 September at 11:30-13:00 in Brussels!
