What is the Covenant-Europe? The EU Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy brings together thousands of local governments that want to secure a better future for their citizens. By joining the initiative, they voluntarily commit to implementing EU climate and energy objectives. The Covenant of Mayors was launched in 2008 in Europe. Not only did the initiative introduce a first-of-its-kind bottom-up approach to energy and climate action, but its success quickly went beyond expectations.

The Covenant- Europe members are signatories, coordinators and supporters. Signatories are local governments. Covenant coordinators are national, regional and sub-regional public authorities and entities, such as ministries, regions, and provinces. They pledge to provide technical and financial support to signatories for the development and implementation of their action plans. Supporters, instead are non–profit organisations, such as energy and environmental agencies, NGOs and associations of local authorities. They also pledge to provide technical support to municipalities. On the website, you will find all the signatories, coordinators, and supporters.

Moreover, on the website you can find updates on Good Practices and campaigns like the Cities Energy Savings Sprint. This campaign is organised together with the European Commission and the Committee of Regions as part of the RePowerEU plan. The campaign aims to support the covenant community to immediately reduce energy dependence from Russia, through the implementation of quick and low-cost measures, accelerate the storage of energy sources ahead of the next Autumn and prevent one-size-fits-all national measures that do not address territorial differences.
