A guide on good practice to boost energy efficiency

The “Guide on good practice in energy efficiency for Central and South Eastern Europe (CESEC)” that gathers more than 60 good practices meant to support a clean energy transition in that region has been published.

It was launched at the Sustainable Energy Investment Forum that took place on 28 June in Sofia, followed by the CESEC High-Level Group Ministerial meeting on 29 June. These good practices presented in the guide are the results resulting from projects supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe and Horizon 2020 programmes addressing key energy efficiency areas of relevance for the CESEC region.

Those projects provide examples of actions that have already or are expected to have a significant impact in the targeted regions. The project actions could be replicated and their results and outcomes could be used to considerably increase energy efficiency.

The good practices address in particular:

  • energy performance of buildings,
  • efficiencyof district heating and cooling networks,
  • energy poverty,
  • investments in energy efficiency,
  • energy efficiency in industry and business and
  • engagement of stakeholders at all governance levels to support energy efficiency.

Set up in 2015, the “Central and South-Eastern European Energy Connectivity” (CESEC) initiative aims to accelerate the integration of Central and South-Eastern European gas markets and diversify gas supplies. It brings together nine EU Member States (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia) and eight Energy Community Contracting Parties (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine).

In 2016, a decision was made to broaden the CESEC mandate beyond gas to include other key areas, such as electricity trading and market coupling; the coordinated planning and development of power grid infrastructures; renewable energy, and energy efficiency. In the area of energy efficiency, the cooperation includes sharing information and experience.
